As social distancing norms are still in effect, online interactions are here to stay. Fortunately, online conferencing tools like Zoom have made it incredibly convenient for businesses to connect with clients for consultations and service delivery. At Everstone Law Professional Corporation, I quickly adapted to the present state of client-business interactions and have managed to make them work successfully.

There are a range of considerations which can determine how legal fees are calculated by criminal defence lawyers. Certain criteria can include, but are not limited to: the nature of the charge, number of charges, years of experience, complexity of the case, mode of trial, number of witnesses, length of trial, number of pretrial/trial applications involved; etc.

When it comes to the field of criminal law, it is always important to stay up to date on recent case law. This is important as there are always new developments in this area of practice which can change how current issues have been decided and how substantive laws have been interpreted.

Bill C-75: Parliament of Canada is revising provisions in the Criminal Code and associated acts. Under Bill C- 75: An Act to Amend the Criminal Code, Youth Criminal Justice Act and other Acts and to make consequential amendments to other acts.

Previously under the Criminal Code of Canada, Section 737 mandated that any offender who is convicted, or discharged under section 730, of an offence under the Criminal Code or the Controlled and Drugs and Substances Act, shall pay a victim Surcharge in addition to any other punishement imposed on the offender. Section 737(2) further read that the determination of the amount was 30% of the fine imposed; $100 in the offence was punishable by way summary conviction; and 200$ if offence punishable by Indictment.
